Tendonitis Symptoms and Causes

Tendonitis is a condition that occurs when a tendon becomes inflamed and painful to move.This often happens when it is overused and can often be seen in tendons of the arm, shoulder, and knee. Although tendinitis is usually easy to treat, it may limit mobility and cause pain and discomfort in the affected area. Causes

Tendons often become inflamed when certain parts of the body are repetitively used to perform certain actions. Symptoms

Many people who experience tendonitis complain about a dull aching sensation when they try to move any part of the body that is affected. Tenderness and swelling in the affected area is another common symptom. If the condition is severe enough, it may be nearly impossible to move a certain limb or joint due to acute tendon inflammation.

Treatment

There are several different treatment options that can alleviate pain and reduce tendon swelling. Some suffers benefit from exercise therapy, which works to stretch and strengthen tendons and prevent future flare-ups from happening. Pills and topical creams that reduce inflammation can also help. Pain can be reduced by taking pain medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen and an injection of a corticosteroid around the tendon may also treat this condition in severe cases. Treatment using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is another method that doctors sometimes use to combat this problem. In more severe cases, a surgical procedure may be the best option.

Preventing Tendonitis

Although it may be sometimes difficult to prevent tendonitis, there are a few ways to reduce a person’s risk. Certain physical activities can be performed with less intensity so there is not as much stress being placed on the tendons. Stretching before performing physical activities can help tendons accommodate any extra strain. There should also be some variety in the types of activities that are performed to avoid repetitive strain. Form and technique can be improved so that tasks can be performed safer. Certain work places provide ergonomic assessments so that employees can make any adjustments to their chairs, computers and other parts of their work stations that will put less stress on their tendons.

Tendonitis is a common medical condition that may lead to further problems if it is not treated properly. Taking the necessary precautions and knowing what to do if tendonitis develops can be highly beneficial for everyone.
