The turmoil of teenage life is full of anxiety-driven moments and decisions.  Teenagers can become stressed out over issues from an exam in school to social anxiety. When the turmoil of anxiety becomes a constant in a teen’s day-to-day life, the teen should receive help as soon as possible.

Prevalence of anxiety among teens

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) finds that anxiety disorders affect approximately 25.1 percent of teens between the ages of 13 and 18. The NIMH adds that around 5.9 percent of adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 struggle with a severe anxiety disorder.

It is important to catch the signs and symptoms of an anxiety disorder as soon as possible and seek professional treatment. Many people attempt to keep an anxiety disorder to themselves and continue without help, resulting in greater damage to their health.

Signs and symptoms of teen anxiety

The NIMH does not define differences between symptoms of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents from adults. However, common symptoms of anxiety include:

●      Feelings of urgency or nervousness

●      Becoming tired easily

●      Experiencing trouble concentrating

●      Muscle tension

●      Problems sleeping or eating

●      Irritability

●      Difficulty controlling worry

Feeling anxiety from time to time is normal and many of these symptoms can occur on their own in everyday life. An individual with an anxiety disorder will experience these symptoms constantly and have little rest from them. It is important to seek professional help if these symptoms worsen overtime. The causes for teenage anxiety are derived from several factors of the teen’s life.

Causes of teen anxiety.

Since there are several forms of anxiety disorders a teenager can struggle with, there are a variety causes for the anxiety disorder. Anxiety may arise out of specific situations, multiple events or relationships with others. Some common causes of anxiety in teenagers include:

●      Problems with school, work, or family

●      Relationship issues

●      Exposure to stressful life events in childhood and adulthood

●      Peer pressure

●      Separation from loved ones

Anxiety in a teenager can result from one or several of these causes and shape which form of anxiety disorder the teenager has. In a medical professional’s diagnosis, the causes and symptoms will be taken into account while developing a treatment plan.

Teen anxiety treatment

The basic methods for treatment of a teen’s anxiety disorder holds similarities with treatment for anxiety disorders in adults. As explained by the NIMH, teen anxiety treatment options may involve psychotherapy or “talk therapy” and medication.

Since each individual and the circumstances of their anxiety disorder are unique, treatment methods are not “one size fits all.” During a diagnosis, proper treatment professionals will take into account a person’s family and medical history, current condition and any past treatment received for an anxiety disorder.

If a teen allows an anxiety disorder to develop and does not receive treatment, it can manifest in adulthood and control their life. Regardless of when an anxiety disorder develops, an individual should seek treatment when it is available.
