You're Ashtanga curious. Here are some tips on how to get started and what you can expect.
- Traditionally, students practice Mysore-style most of the week with possibly one to two days of led classes to check in with vinyasas and breathing.
- A Mysore class is formatted so that each student is working independently with a teacher on their individual practice. In a led class, all students in the classroom practice the same asanas together while the teacher counts the vinyasas.
- Students can start with 2-3 days of practice per week and build up to as many as 6 days per week. Saturdays or Sundays are a day of rest as are the first three days of the menstrual cycle (called ladies' holiday). Moon days (full or new moon) are also a day of rest.
- It is a good idea to observe a Mysore class before beginning practice for the first time.
