Fiber for Blood Pressure

Eating whole grains may lower your risk of high blood pressure, according to a Harvard School of Public Health study. One reason: They contain fiber, which produces by-products that may reduce damage to your arteries and help prevent hypertension, says study coauthor Eric Rimm, Sc.D.
And fiber-rich whole foods are better than supplements because they contain several nutrients. The effect is synergistic: while fiber may be the nutrient most beneficial to blood pressure, Rimm says, its effect is enhanced by a food's antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, most notably potassium.
