Psychological Issues in Teen Rhinoplasty

There are a number of reasons a patient might decide that they would like cosmetic surgery, and rhinoplasty comes with its fair share of psychological attachments. The nose is an important and prominent part of our face and it's only natural that we form an emotional bond with it - either in a negative or positive way. This is particularly true when it comes to teenagers who are often self-conscious about their appearance.

Unfortunately, underlying psychological issues, as well as peer pressure and unrealistic images promoted by the media, all may play a part in a teen's desire for rhinoplasty.

For some teens, the desire for cosmetic improvement may be rooted in a serious condition known as Body Dysmorphic Disorder, or BDD. BDD is a chronic mental illness characterized by obsession or preoccupation with one's appearance and, in particular, very minor or imagined flaws or defects. Studies how that the number of people who undergo plastic surgery and who have BDD varies between 10 and 50 percent. It's only logical to assume that, as an often psychologically vulnerable age-group, a high proportion of teens who undergo rhinoplasty may well be suffering from mild or even acute BDD.

There are other teen-related psychological issues such as depression or low self-esteem stemming from bullying or an inaccurate comparison with prominent role models which can lead to the desire for cosmetic improvement.

It is the plastic surgeon's to ensure that the choice for rhinoplasty has been made with as much emotional and intellectual maturity as is expected for a surgical procedure. They will take the time to establish that the teen is ready physically and emotionally to go through with the rhinoplasty and that they understand the risks of a surgical intervention. This often means liaising with parents or guardians as well as the teen to ensure that the procedure is undertaken for all the right reasons, and that all parties are aware of any long-term consequences. In appropriately selected teen patients, rhinoplasty can be a very rewarding experience.
