When we learn how to meditate, we are essentially attempting to go into a deep state of relaxation or awareness of ourselves. The goal of all meditation techniques is to learn how to focus and quiet your mind. But what should you do in order to practice these essentials of meditation? Read on.
First, find and set aside some time to meditate in your daily routine. It can be a mere five minutes to at least 30 minutes or an hour, depending on what works for you.
Second, you want to find or even create an environment that is relaxing for you. TVs and other electronics should be unplugged or shut-off if you want to meditate in silence. If you are playing music, it needs to be peaceful and gentle in order to help you concentrate. Meditating outside, especially in nature, is also another choice if the weather is to your liking.
When you sit and meditate, you want to sit on steady, level ground. If you want more stability, using a cushion will also work. It's also important to when you are sitting to keep your back straight. If you choose to lie down, make sure you also lie with your back straight on level ground with your legs straight and arms at your sides or crossed on your stomach.
When you meditate, it is recommended to have your eyes half-open and breathing deeply slowly. Breathing sound not happen from the chest, but from the abdomen and you should be able to feel your stomach rise and fall in repetitions. A simple breathing exercise before you perform the meditation of your choice is highly recommended because it will allow you to focus on the kind of meditation you plan to perform.
When you are performing meditation exercises or even the meditation itself not only should you focus your attention (especially by not forcing it), but to relax each muscle of your body slowly and with ease.
If you feel like your mind is racing or distracted by thoughts that shouldn't be trying to interrupt your focus, acknowledge that thought for a few seconds and then let it go. You might want to have a point of focus so that your mind doesn't wander off too much. It could be a picture, candle, perhaps someone you want to send healing energy to, etc.
Finally, once you have done all these steps, you should be able to silence and clear your mind. This requires a lot of discipline, but with hard work and effort, you should be able perfect this and become a master of meditation.
