5 Easy Steps to Make Sure Your New Year Resolution Becomes A Reality

By Lela Iskandar

How many goals have you attained since you made your last year resolution?

Most people would not admit that none of their resolutions came through. Worse, some even forgot what their resolutions are by February.

If you fall into one of the above category, this new year is a perfect time to start anew. This year, start it with a bang. Start by learning how to make new years resolution that lasts with these 5 easy ways:

First Step - Just Start Buy yourself a nice diary or at the very least set aside a simple sketch book that you can use to record your resolution and things that you are doing in order to achieve them.

Why write it down? Because your goals are easier to achieve if it's put in writing.

A study done at Harvard Business School between 1979 and 1989 have proved that those who had written down plans and goals were earning on average 10 times more than the other 97%. The study showed that the simple act of writing a goal down on paper increased its chances of being accomplished by a staggering 90%!

If you have read the novel - Bridget Jones's Diary, you know it begins with her New Year's goals: lists of things she will and won't do.

Copy that. Start your diary/goal book with with a few positive sentences about your greatest accomplishments last year. After that you can basically just write anything that comes to mind - just make sure they are specific.

That's the first step - Just start. Don't under estimate the power of starting. A year from now you may wish you had started today.

Then, Get Help Sometimes we need outside pressure to achieve our resolution. Tell your friends and family members about your goals. Better still, get yourself a resolution-buddy who shares your New Year's Resolution as a benchmark and as a partner who can motivate each other.

If your family, friends or work colleagues are aware of your goals, they're much more likely to be supportive and will be a source of encouragement for you to stay on track when you are having trouble reaching your goals.

On the other hand, if you look as if you are starting to wonder off those goals, they are the one who will start make fun or ridicule you for your short lived passion. While this may not sound encouraging, let me tell you one thing. Outside pressure like this work wonders!

To change old habits, earn more money, quit smoking, lose weight or achieve so many other resolutions, you need this kind of peer pressure. Without some kind of outside pressure, most people will slip.

Follow this step or your resolution will probably be forgotten about before the first month is over.

Remember To Reward Yourself Once you have completed a resolution, give yourself a prize or a gift. This will encourage your subconscious mind to fulfill the others too.

This doesn't mean that if your resolution is to lose weight you can eat a box of cake as a reward. Instead, celebrate your success by treating yourself to something that you enjoy.

Rewarding yourself like this may sound childish but why do you think people buy nice cars, expensive watch or a huge mansion? That's basically a way of rewarding themselves. But most people do it subconsciously - they are not aware that they are rewarding themselves for their hard work.

Of course, that is just an example. Go with something more modest and would not put a big hole in your pocket.

But Don't Beat Yourself Up Sometimes, in trying to achieve your goals, you may slip.

When you are in this situation, don't beat yourself up. Obsessing over those occasional slip won't help you achieve your goal. Tell yourself that it's a normal thing and start making plans to put those goals in mind again.

Do not make goals that are unreasonable or next too impossible to obtain in a year. You are only setting yourself up to be discouraged and disappointed.

When confronted with this problem, take some time to figure out what you really want for yourself. Ask yourself if the goal is going to be good for you or will it be a torture.

Some people who want to lose weight put themselves on a starvation diet, instead of gradually reducing their food intake and exercising. That's torture.

Remember, don't beat yourself out.

Set Proper Goals There's a famous saying that goes like this - "The difference between a dream and a goal is the goal is simply a dream with deadline".

This year you must make a proper resolution and jot down the expected deadline. Again, do not make a big fuss if you do not reach your goal by that date. It is meant to make you start, and continually working towards it's realization. It's not meant to be a tool for torture.

Set a goal that can be achieved in steps or phases, one that you have a chance of being successful at. Not only they are easier to keep, it will also motivate you to accomplish the bigger ones

New Year Resolutions are nothing but short-term yearly goals that help us to improve or break out of bad habits. Remember the 5 keys to achieve your new year resolutions - just start, get help, reward yourself, don't beat yourself up and most importantly set proper goals.

This year, evaluate the price of your goals in terms of sacrifice, time, efforts, money, persistence and willpower that you will need to fulfill your New Year goals and tell yourself that this time, you know what it takes to achieve those goals.

Tell yourself that his time, you are ready.
